MAGISTRATE'S COURT
OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Tho use of obscene lauguage in the streets of' Wellington is becoming very frequont, and almost every day tho Magistrates aro called upon to deal with' such cases. On Saturday Mr. W. G. lliddoll, S.M., who presided at the Court, had three of these cases before him, and inlliotcd substantial penalties.
William Henry Williams, for using obscene languago in Holland Street, was lined £3, in default twenty-one days' imprisonment. Fred Gitshan, who, while drunk, used obsceno language in Morcer Street, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and lined £3, in tha alternative 21 days' imprisonment on the charge of using obsoene language. William Wilson, for drunkenness', he being an old offouder in this respeot, was fined 405., in default 14 days' imprisonment, and for using obscene languago in Post Office Square he was fined ±'3, in-default to servo 21 days in. gaol. , A month's imprisonment was inflicted, on James Buddie, who pleaded fuilty to assaulting his wife, Patience my Ruddle. John Arthur Jackson and James Grogan, both with long lists of previous conviotions, were each sentenced to one month's imprisonment for tho theft of an overcoat valued at £8 from the porch of a church.
A remand to Wednesday was granted in the case of Herbert Lloyd Jones, who was charged with attempting to commit theft or the contents of a case of whisky valued at £3 4s. Bd., the property of F. J. Oakes.
For insobriety, Catherine Mary Smith was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and throe first offenders •were convicted and discharged.
