HEALTH OF THE CAMPS
' A GREAT IMPROVEMENT. A very satisfactory report, on the health of tho camps has been received by the Defence Minister (Sir James Allen) from the Director-General of Medical Services. The report was in effect a return of the numbers of cases of more serious sickness that have occurred in first four months' of this year and the corresponding months of iast year, and the comparison so mado show's that the health of the camps has improved very much duriug the year. Following arc the chief points in the report: — Admissions to hospital: 191G—Trentham 147G, Fcatherston 1811: total 3?87. 1917—Trentham 433, Featherston 694; total 1147.
Measles cases: 1916—Trentliam 212, Featherston 347; total 559. 1917— Trentliam 18, Featherston 24; total 42. Influenza cases: 1916—Trentbam 625, Featherston 303; total 928. . 1917— Treuthani 28, Featherston 107; total 135. Cerebro-spinal meningitis: 1916— Trenthain 1, Featherston 2; total 3. 1 1917—Trentliam nil. Featherston 1. Pneumonia associated with measles: 1916—Trenthain 1. Featherston 2.. 1917 -Nil. ■ . Commenting on tlio report, the Defence Minister said that the. state cf affairs revealed was highly gratifying. The Director-General of Medical Services has stated that the improvement was the result of improved precautionary measures taken in the camps, cl'iof among these being the use of inhalation rooms, thri general use of gargles and sprays for the throat, and the isolation of all men with suspicions throat affections. "We children will have to put this country right after tho war, so we must work hard and become well educated," runs a passage in an elementary school , pupil's essay, quoted by Dr. Kimmins, chief inspector of London schools, to the Child Study Society,
