JAPAN'S BID FOR SEA TRADE
FEVERISH ACTIVITY IN THE SHIPYARDS. (Rec. May 9, 7 p.m.) Tokio, May 8. Japan is rapidly becoming a firstclass shipping Power. The yards added 140,000 tons to her merchant fleet in 1916, and a further 60,000 tons since the New Year. The merchant fleet now consists of 11,372 ships, of which I 2185 are steamers, aggregating 2.333,000 tons. There is feverisji activity in ! the shipyards, for the Japanese will not even be. content with- monopolising the commerce of the Pacific.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
