MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE'CASES. Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M.', heard the' police cases' at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety, Margaret Williams was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. George Baird was also fined 1:0s., in default in gaol. John Greenwell -was fined 10s., in the alternative three days' imprisonment. Five first offenders were convicted and discharged. ' ■ For -using obsoene language in Cuba Street on April 3, Henry Somervillo was convicted arid fined 205., in the alternative three days' imprisonment. Two seamen, George Henderson and Thomas Charles Steel, were charged with deserting from an overseas vessel. They gave as an excuse the answer that they came ashore and got very drunk. As the vessel to which they belonged had Mnce left, thoy wore ordered to join another vessel, and were released in the meanwhile on condition that they report to the police once a week. Alfred Edward Colmer, for whom Mr. C. W. Nielsen appeared, was charged with assaultilng John Burke. The parties were landlord and tenant, and the trouble was said to have arisen over a notice to quit served upon the tenant. The assault was a trivial one, and accused was convicted and discharged. Patrick Maloney was charged with being found hopelessly drunk in Cuba Street, also with failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order in respect to,his wife, ishe arrears amounting to £154 10s. Inspeotor Marsack said that _there was 6ome doubt as to the identity of the accused in respect to the eecond charge, and a remand was granted until to-day. THE CIVIL LIST. The civil cases were taken by 'Mr. W. G. Hiddell, S.M. The New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Bacon Company proceeded against Powell and Son, butchers, of Westporti to .recover £10 6s. Id. for sausage casings supplied. For the defence it was allegea that the sausage casings were not wholesome. Judgment was given for the full amount claimed, with costs totalling: £5 19s. Mr. F. C. Ward appeared for plaintiffs and Mr. P. J. O'Regan for defendants'. UNDEFENDED CASES. Judgment'Tiy default was given for plaintiff in the following cases:—The Town and Country Supply Stores v. Fred Knigge, £5 Is. Bd., costs £1 7s.' 6d.; Inglis .Bros, and • Co., Ltd., v. Reginald William King, £10 18s. 2d., ■costs £1 35.; John Chambers and Son, Ltd.. v. E. Plunkett, £9 10s. 6d., costs £1 6s. 6d. : . • JUDGMENT SUMMONS.' In a judgment summons case Sydney Sollwood was ordered to pay Douglas Milton £8 65. , 6 d. by May 22 r in Sefault seven days in gaol. . AN UNUSUAL CASE. A case which took up the whole of the afternoon was that in which M'Williams and Co., represented by Mr. A. W. Blair, proceeded against Stevenson, Ferguson, and Co.; Tor whom Mr. A. Dunn appeared, to recover £125 or possession of a concrete mixer and £20 damages. According to evidence given, the mixer was sent' by plnintiffs to ' defendants to be repaired, about eighteen months ago. Hie account sent in by defendants was considered excessive, and plaintiffs paid £7 end ask?d for the return of the .machine. This was refused, and the plaintiffs took legal proceedings.
