FARMER DROWNED

WHEN FORDING SWOLLEN RIVER, By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, May 7. News has been received l of a drowning accident which occurred at Komako on Saturday evening, the victim being Mr. John Cowdrey, settler, of Pokangina. It,appears he was crossing the Pohangina River, and his horse, becoming sestive in the swollen stream, threw him. As he was wearing a heavy tweed overcoat, it is thought he became entangled and had no chance of saving his life. He leaves a wife and three children. The body was recovered yesterday morning, and to show his practical sympathy, one young farmer, calling "at the nearest house for pen and ink, drew a cheque for £20 and. sent it along ,to the widow.
