VALEDICTORY

A very pleasant function took place at Miss "Maxwell's rooms'on Saturday evening, when Sir. N. D. Francis, secretary and accountant to tho Wellington Publishing Company, was entertained by liis associates of The Dominion at a farewell dinner, on the occasion of his departure from the service of tho company to enter into a business partnership. Mr. C. W. Earle (editor' and managing director) presided, and the other departments of the papor were represented. In proposing the health of the departing officer, Mr. Earle paid a high trihutc to Mr. Francis's personal worth and to tho service he had rendered the company in his capacity as its secretary and accountant. He especially mentioned the ability he had shown in his handling of the company's books and accounts, aud the admirable system and method he had prepared for tho administration of the largo amount of trust moneys subscribed through The Dominion for the various patriotic and other war funds'. The system planned liy Mr, Francis for dealing with these funds had been held up as a model for others to follow. ' The company parted from Mr. Francis with very great regret, and as a parting token of esteem directors had great pleasure in handing him a cheque for a substantial amount, coupled with the best wishes for his future success. On behalf of the staff, Mr. Earle also presented to Mr. Francis a handsome gold watch. Tho toast of the departing officer was enthusiastically drunk, with musical honours.

Mr. A. Sando, manager, added his appreciation of Mr. Francis's services, and tho latter suitably responded.

Mr. G. S. M'Nair, who succeeds Mr. Francis as accountant, was introduced to those present and received a hearty welcome.
