HOTEL WORKERS
; CLAIMS FOR NEW AWARD. Claims have been filed by the Wellington District Hotel, Club, and Restaurant Workers' Union for a new award in respect to employees of city and suburban hotels. The demands are briefly as follow (existing conditions being stated in parentheses):— Hours of work: Males over 18, 56 per week (60); youths and females, 52 per week; to be worked on six days in the week.
Wages: Kitchen, five or more- hands, from £5 10s._to £2 2s. 6d.' (£i 10s. to £1 7s. 6d.); four hands, £4 15s. to £2 2s. 6d. (£4 to £1 7s. 6d.); three hands, £4 to £2 2s. 6d. (£3 10s. to £1 7s. 6d.); two hands, £3 os. to £2 os. (£2 10s. and £1 10s.); one hand, £2.155. (£2); kitchen haitfl attending to boilers, os. per week extra. Dining room: Head-waiter, £3; others, £2 10s: (£1 12s. 6d.), head waitress £2,' others £1 10s. (£1 2s. 6d-), housemaid-waitress £1 10s., where no waitresses employed, £1 155., housemaid. £1 10s. (17s. 6d.), pantryman £2 os. (£llos. and £1 7s. 6d.), pantrymaids £1 10s. (£1), barmen and barmaids £3 (£2 ss. and £1 10s.), cellarmcn £3, managers (other than licensee) £4, assistant managers £3 10s., male clerks £3, female . clerks £2, night porters (in charge of bar or locker) £3, others £2 os.. (£1 10s.), hall porters (head) £2 10s., others £2 2s. 6d., general hands £2 2s. Bd., billiard markers £2 10s. (£1 10s.), laundresses £1 los. (£1 55.), linen maids £1 10s. For casual labour and special occasions an increase of approximately ss. per day all round is sought. "' . i Clauses regarding overtime, termination of employment, payment of wages, etc., are the same as in the existing award. Increases of os. and 2s. 6d. per week in the board and lodging allowances are asked for. The demands also embody clauses regarding copies of the award, time and wages book, time sheet, and holiday book as provided for by Statute. Two weeks' annual holiday on full pay is asked for, and double pay for work done on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, and Sovereign's Birthday. Engagement of workers through tho union office (now provided for .-in tho private hotels award) and an amended preference clause are also sought. Tho dispute will come before the Conciliation Commissioner (Jir. W. H. Hagger) on May 16. Assessors nominated uy tho tinion are: Messrs. H. 0 Malley, A. Jackson, and J. M'Cusker.
