CHARGE OF BIGAMY
A MASTERTON" CASE. At the Police Court yesterday, morning (says the "Wairarapa Times") an ex-soldier, named Charley, Henry RoxborougTi, aged 23 years, 'was charged with having committed bigamy by going through the form of marriage witli Dorothy Maud Bushett, at Knox Church,'Masterton. on April 4, 1917, when lie had already been married to Lizzie Maud Woolcy,' aged 21, at Auckland, on June I, 1914- Miss Bushett's age was given as 22 on the marriage certificate.
Sergeant Jlillor " said that Rex- • borough lived for some time'with his first wife in AucVanci, and there were two children. He then deserted his wife, and there was a warrant issued for his arrest for-wife desertion. Roxborough joined the- forces about four : months ago, and was attached to the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements at Trenthpn, where lie became acquainted with Dorothy Bushett. Later he was. transferred to Featherston, and when Roxborough got his final leave in March he and Miss Fush'eEt went to Mastertoil and were married on April 4. The man practically admitted the offence to the arresting constable, but said he Tiad heard his wife had gone back to England, and'he was at liberty to get married again. 1 TTie Rev. '6. T. Brown, in evidence, said that, about April 1, Roxborough called and arranged to get married on April 4. TTTien he first called Rox- ' borough brought the usual license from the registrar. On April 4 Roxoorough and his bride came along and were duly married. Roxborough siffneu the marriage register produced. The witness and bride also signed the register. Constable Tricklobaijk. of Wellington, said that on Anril 20, in company with ConstaTfle M'Holm, he arrested acmisecl Roxborough. He was then a soldier. ' He was a member of the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements, and was about to leave New Zealand.' When charged lie replied, "Someone told mc slio (meaning his first wife) had gone to back England, and I thought I could get married again." Sergeant Miller said that Roxborough intended to plead guilty. 'His Worship said there should be some proof of accused's first marriage. . Sergeant Miller produced a copy of the accused's first marriage certificate. The sergeant said Mrs. Wooley (mother of the first wife) had been .subpoenaed, but had not yet arrived. The case was adjourned to allow Mrs. Wooley to appear.
A LETTER FROM AN "OVERLAND" OWNER. "1" have no liositntion in saying tliat the Overland is the best proposition 1 have struck for tlie money in cars"— that is an extract from a letter written by Mr. Greenwell, of Huntly. He also snys: "I liiive done a lot of touring with other cars, and am able to judge of the behaviour of the Overland. I put in the tank four gallons of benzine and did 97.5 miles on the Hamilton and Gordonto!) roads."
