MILITARY SERVICE ACT
Sir,—l notice in your paper of April that a reservist secured exemption under section 3 of clause 18 of the Military Service Acf (That tlio appeV laut is the sole surviving son or his parents, who military age, ami that at least one of his tt-pthnrs has served with some portion of His JHaiestv's Forces in connection with the present war, and has lost his life bfl reason of such service). ; . Can you tell me should a surviving son (a"brother died ini New Zealand twelve months ago) be exempted.", Also a man has two sons;.' one gets killed at the front, and the surviving son is exempted, while the man unfortunate" enough to liave only one son does not get exemption.- It would give general satisfaction if. this wa3 made clear, as there does not-seem the slightest difference in the two cases. Both parties should bo left with a surviving son, as is the case in France and Hussia and other countries, evert Australia, until the Second Division IS called up.-I am, otc, . [The exemption provided in section 3 of clause 18 of the' Military Service Act applies only to a sole surviving son of military age who has lost ab least one brother on service in the prfr* sent war. It does not cover the case of an only son, or of a sole surviving son whose brother or brothers have, died elsewhere than on service.] .
