The death occurrod yesterday at. Carterton of Oliver Keith Bayliss, son of Mr W 0. Bayliss, a well-known Parkvale farmer. Deceased was 21 jearsof age, and had not been in good health for some time. , Mr Ernest Drake, formerly of Dunedin, and now of Auckland, has been Med by tho Royal Choral ton to sing the part of Don Cesar de BaZ an in "Maritana" at tho Town Hall on Juno 9. He was ono of the oldest members of the looal foresters' Lodge. Mr Joseph lorns, the oldest auctioneer in tho Wairarapa, who is retiring from active work, was enter-tained-by the staffs of c the combined auctioneering firms on Saturday, and presented with a motor coat. Mr. Harold Gregson, the Auckland organist, left for Christehurch last evening to adjudicate at the music competition* to be held there this week. ! ' ;' „
Captains C. B. Atwood and J. 6, iKine were re-elected president, and. vice-president of the Merchant Service Guild at yesterday's meeting. . Captain E. G. Thomas, president or the Auckland branch of the _ Isavy League, recently placed his services at the disposal of the Admiralty. The committee- of the, Victoria Cnllego Students' Association records with, deep regret the death in action of two Rhodes Scholars of this College, Capt Alan MacDougall and Lieutenant Atbol, Hudson. To one and all tho news of their death came as a great snocK, and a wide circle of friends mourns the loss of two very distinguished students. The association feels that tapir death has bereft both the university and tho State of two most, promising cTtUs. A. F. Meldnim and Mr. H. A. Mackenzie. Sergt. -Meldnim was one of the successful candidates and the committee, on behalf of the college, congratulates him on attaining this distinction.
