THE RAILWAYS
, NO'RELIEF YET.
The Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. H. Merries), replying to an inquiry as to what the Department proposed to do about the reduced train services now that there were hopes of some supplies gt coal, said that the present service would bo continued until supplies of coal sufficient for the needs of the Department were in hand or in sight. He agreed that it was possible that the coal-saving service would be run till tho day appointed for the adoption of, the staff-saving scheme, of which notice had been given,. It is probable, therefore, that the public will have to put up with the present services until May 6, and that if at that date there are better prospects of a more regular and more plentiful gupply of coal, the Department may be disposed to relax .some of the present restrictions, especially those regarding the carriage of certain classes of goods.
