FRENCH CLUB
A very large number attended the opening of the winter session of the • French Club in Bartlett's studio. The evening commenced with the playing of the French national air on the piano by .Madam Deehanet-Macintosh, followed by ' Mr. Foster's "Solo de Piano," a lengthy I selection, finely rendered. . . The president (Captain Barclay) ad- ' dressed the gathering on various topics, dwelling chiefly on the war. On beliulf • of the club lie thanked Mr. T. H. Whetton for compiling the programme for the session; it was excellent and full of everything good to hear. He reminded : members that it was their duty -to see that it was carried out/. Then followed "Le Eetour des Promis," a son? harl moniously produced by Miss de Cleene. • There ' was no', fault : to find with Miss Allen's charming little recitation "J'.eur Notour dans la l'atrie" except its brevity. Mr. J. Rigp; made an impromptu speech on various matters, but chiefly about a trip to Melbourne, and whilst there of a visit to the Alliance Franeaise which was run to vastly different lines to the .club here. Of course, he said, the i Wellington lines could beat those of MelI bourne. Without joking the Wellington I Club's lines could not be beaten in the transportation of French practice. "Les Pigeons dn British" was read by Miss Van Stavei'en. Miss Hind' recited "Qn'ns-tu fait de ta jeunesser" Captain Barclay sang "La Marseillaise," and ■everyone joined., in the chorus. The evening concluded with "God Save the King." .
