Van Staveren moved: "That no war bonus be paid to any officers of the board who.are in. feceipt of : £300, per.,annum or,more.". \ _ In speaking, to the. motion, Mr. Van' Staveren ;said.that they, were all making V sacrifices at the present time, and he did' not think that those getting ■higlusalaries .should., bonuses, particularly those who were already, getting.free coal<*ndlighting. '-. . ;Mr. D. .Campbell seconded .the., motion. , .■'.'■;'.'' ;. ... .The Rev. Dr. Elliott said.he couldnet aaxee with, the motion. It appeared .to him that .'many we're only inclined to. favour, the. one.class —the poor—whereas justice should be done to ; all classes, rich and poor.' He had fottnd throughout a long life that 'the wore money he had the nwre_ his expenditure,' and responsibilities ' in- ■ creased. : I The .chairman said that, the position i was that the* arrangement affected j three persons, and would involve the I board in the expenditure of £46 16s. Mr./ Van ; Staveren made a .warm protest against - the action- of the chairman, but the ' protest fell oh deaf ears!
