INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION
ALLEGED DELAYS IN HANDLING CARGO. A meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association was held last night, Mr. F. J. Evans, presiding.
A discussion was taken in committee regarding the selection of candidates , for the municipal and Harbour Board elections. There was a suggestion that it might be wise.for the association to support the tioket put forward by the Greater Wellington Municipal Electors' Association, but this met with strong opposition. The opinion of the majority of the members was that the association, being a non-political body, ought not to take any part in any elections, and a resolution to this effect was carried on the voices.
The secretary's action in authorising tho Mayor to cable to Jin Empire organisation in London the support of the Wellington Ironmasters' Association to a memorandum to the War Cabinet asking for Empire tariff preference was confirmed. -The president reported that, ho had that afternoon waited upon the chairman of the Industrial Efficiency Board to urge upon him the necessity fer scientific research. He hoped that tho deputation would achieve something. It ivas announced that the eum of £14 14s. had already been subscribed to a research fund, to help Professor Easterfield to undertake certain works he had on hand. It "was hoped that this week the association would be able to .remit tho full amount of £50 promised to Professor Easterfield for his researches. Mr. F. W. Vickerman brought under the notice of the association the greab wasto of time and effort caused by the delays in getting cargo on to the north and the south boats. Often there were 40 or 50 carts 'waiting, and sometimes oargo was taken down as often as three times before it could be loaded on to a ship. Hβ suggested that arrangements might be made to have storage provided by the Harbour Board. This would obviate repeated handlings of goods. Other members agreed that tl e state of affairs was quite as serious as Mr. Vickerman had indicated.—lt was decided to invite the co-operation of the two Chambers of Commerce and the Employers' Association in approaching the Harbour Board on the question. It was agreed that the deputation should go to the Harbour Boiird with proposals drafted ready for submission to the board. The president, with Mr. Vickerman and Mr. Mainland, were appointed a committee to prepare proposals, and to invite the assistance of the other bodies in bringing the matter under tho notice of the bonrd.
