SINGLE V. TRIPLE JUDGES

"Antiquated, cumbersome, and timo killing" is the way in which the "Breeders' Gazette" (Chicago) charac-' torises the system of having threo judges instead of one in the horse section of;tho recent International Show in Chicago. "The three-judge system was largely responsible," it sajis, "for delay which annoyed all concerned and prevented thousands of spectators from witnessing tho championship competitions, in which the keenest interest is always centred. All the draught breeds used three judges, and no breed l finished its adjudications on the day allotted. Occasionally some inconsistency of placing the winners would arise because of the compromises the judges made with one another's opinions in. order to avoid further delays. Any one of tho judges of any. of the breeds would'probably havo done better work; and certainly it would have been more rapid. He would fe'el a greater personal responsibility and tho reasons for decisions would bo more evident to.breeders."

To a lady breeder of Southdown sheep belongs so far the record of beiing the largest individual buyer of the War Loan (says tlje "Live Stock Jour-' .nal"). Lady Wernher, who is credited with being "the richest widow in the country," has bought . £2,000,000 worth. Much of this is "now money," and part is old War Loan, "converted." Lady Wernher inherited groat wealth from her husband, Sir Julius Wernlier, the famous South African diamond and gold magnate, who left over 11-J milKons. " '.■■;•
