C.J.C. MEETING
NYSTAD WINS THE BIG HANDICAP.
By Telegraph—Special Corespondent, Christchurch, April 'J. The Canterbury Jockey CluLrs Autumn; Mooting opened to-day. in dull. weather. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled .£36,657, as against) .638,365 last' year. .. The withdrawal of Peronilla, who has gone wrong, left only four runners in the Kildare Hurdles.. The top weight, .Art, was a good favourite, and after, waiting on Cast Iron till, the last fence was safely cleared he then came away,-and won nicely. Crib was several-lepgths away. and Master Hamilton fell oii-'t'iie flat at the. back of the course. - >
Tlie two starters in the Champagne Stakes both saddled up well. Neithen was extended in the preliminary, and backers laid odds on the pair. Gamecock was in front the'whole way, and yb the finish won rather easily in fast time.
Thames, Cheloma, Brambletye, and Winter Cherry all saddled up well for the Autumn . Plate, 1 -and-heavy support wa6 accorded • them. - At the start. Cheloma was the first to become prominent, and she led Brambletye and Thames into the straight. Brambletye thenjoined the leader, and the pair cleared; out. ■ After a good, finish the Clulkebore filly wore down the English filly, ana won by a neck. Sir Varka wa-s two lengths away, well clear of .Thames awl Killard.
Tete-a-Tete, Varnish, and Jliss.de the two latter because no riders were available, were the eleventh-hour withdrawals frpm the big Handicap. In thei birdcage Croesus appeared overdone, while Oxenhope was on the. big side, Nystad looked a picture, and did a beautiful preliminary,. which got him a lot on support,. Sasanof as usual was on tha light side, but Multifual had a firm look, as did Zuland. MaTgerine • was - verji ragged, but Good Hope and Comely were very fit. ' Tlie.6tart was a wretched one,. Croesus getting all the best of it, whilei Panmure, Beltane, and Red Ribbon were left. After going- a furlong Croesus was out two. lengths from Nystad, with the favourite in the middle. Turning into the straight Croesus was still in charga with Nystad and. Oxenhope next, and Sasanof coming fast on the outside. At the distance Croesus was in trouble, .'ana Ny6tad took, charge from Sasanof. •' Tha latter was being hard- ridden,, and his victory was. proclaimed, but Clarke safe still on tiie leader till a few yards off .thei post, and in a great finish he won by ai neck. . Fiery Cross, was right up, audi then came Margerine/Red Ribbon, ComeCroesus/Beltane; and Multifutd. lb was a great finish,. and tue victory ofl Nystad was solely due to Clarke's fins, handling. Deeley, on Sasanof, was,baa-i ly placed over the first part/ but this was as expected. . . . , - The Chokebore . bracket carried mosti money in the Eussley Plate. -.As .theyi racejl on to the course proper Kilbrnshj was showing out from Killem. . In tha run to the post the latter forged ahead and won nicely, . ridden out. Claverliorse just stalled off Kilmeedy, while Kilrush was fourth. The winner is ai full-brother to Kilboy, and cost IGOgns, as a yearling. . . ~ • In the Sockburn Handicap there were only four runners. Miss de \ al.was 3t slightly better-favourite than Adjutant. The Wellington mare made all the running, but in'the straight Adjutant came along and won comfortably. Miss .da Valliad to be ridden out to beat Mara Antony for second., place. , San Sebastian was tailed ofi. , , , , The big"esl field of the day contested the Gimcrack Handicap. At the barriep rise Tremens was the first to beconicn prominent, and she led into the proper, where the field, spread out wide. Inside the distance AH Serene .- took charge with Charley next. Over the last bit KiiiE Star came fast, and beat All Serene by a length. Arthur George waa close up, followed by Charley,-Kumena, and Kibble. . ;. ~V M The concluding event proved to be the best of "good things for Flying Start, wno wove down Ogier in the straight, , and won handily at the finish. - Kawmohij was close up third. . - .
