A' FARMER'S APPEAL FROM THE BALLOT. ' By Telegraph—Press Association. ' Oamaru, April 2. •. At a sitting of tlie Otago . Appeal (Board to-day an application was made by the military' representative, on behalf of the Commandant, for a rehear;"ing of , the appeal of John Shaw,'farmer, of Incliholme,' wlio in February had his appeal adjourned sine die. The application was vthe outcome of an article' in the ."North Otago Times," which declared' that although the appellant had statell. that he had' no oneto leave in charge of a farm comprising a little over 200 acres, and that t,h© farm would go". out of cultivation if appellant was sent to camp, the article claimed that there was no reason why one brother called-up', in the ballot should have been granted exemption, especially as- : in addition to the mother and sister lie liad a brother, 2G years of age. The appellant had another brother, about J9 ;yearp',of age; who, though working.in Oamaru, had a good knowledge of farming, and should have been called home to relieve the son who .was called up under tlie ballot.
At the .sitting to-day, A. E. Liwreuce, editor .of the paper.; was called before the board to give evidence.
Tim rlwirman of the-board said that, the full facts were not elicited at the previous sittings.
Counsel for' the appellant admitted the facts given . by. the. newspapers, and -the case was sent to .the National Efficiency Board for investigation. '
