NEWTOWN CLUB'S PATRIOTIC DAY On Saturday, afternoon the lad.v bowlers of tho Nowtown C]ub ( assisted by several of tho membors' wives, held a patriotic tea and sale of produce, etc., for tho benefit of tho Trench Comforts Fund. Notwithstanding the unpLjjjiant father conditions, a very satisfactory attendance or bowlers, their families, and friends had assembled by tho time the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke), introduced by Mr. C.! M. Luke, the club's president, opened the proceedings in a very appropriate little speech. Mr 6. Luke, in the courso of ner remarks, stressed tho necessity of doing tho best possible for the boys in tho trenches, and mado a strong appeal for the hearty support of those present iu that afternoon's* effort on behalf of tho fund. Little Miss Popple presented the Mayoress with a handsome bouquet, and after a few words or thanks oy Mrs. Underwood, on behalf of tho ladies, to Mrs. Luko, tho players commenced play in a game East versus West, whilst tho ladies busied themselves with the serious end of the gathering. A splendid response was given to all tia inducements held out for those present to part with their money, and as a result a very gratifying sum will bo handed over to tho Mayoress's Fund.
