WHO IS THE CITY ELECTRICAL ENGINEER?
Sir, —The breeze aii the lush council meeting and rcceiifr/Press correspondence as to who is jthe City Electrical Engineer indicates a most extraordinary state of affairs, "and the. ratepayers oi this city are surely-lookjng for something more than /ainateivr management of the city's electrical undertaking, representing a. capital of £950,000. . It is a very.patent fact to the average ratepayer who is actually the Cits Electrical Engineer, and for them to Tead the Mayor's statement that Mr. W. H. Morton is the City Electrical Engineer is .an insult bo their intelligence. The position is a dual one, Mr. Lauchlan and Mr. Mathew Cable being Lighting and Tramway Electrical Engineer respectively. . Mr. ■ Morton ■ is tho City Engineer, and is admittedly one of the leading civil engineers in Australasia,_ but fc foist upon him the responsibilities".ol Electrical Engineer is beyond the mark, and would only inflict personal embarrassment, inasmuch that in his train; ing and career he has hid no electrica experience whatsoever, '.the professioi of engineer being that of f specialist with special study. The Mayor and councillors cpneornee would be wise to review their _statements,•' remembering that the citizens take a lively interest in oounoil pro ceedings and expect businesslike, ptacedure in the management of the city',! undertakings. '■'.:'. ' Now that the.L'ako Coleridge'-visit r an accomplished fact, we shall.no doub' hear as to the. causes of voltage surg< on the transmission lino, resonance switching, arcs, or lightning; effects.-: I en, etc.,.- - i._, ' • BIEILAE: i; March 80, 1917. . ..... . ,
