The Minister of Education (Hon. J. IA. Hanan) stated to-day that a complete remodelling of the syllabus of the present system of inspection of schools was well in hand, and would be ready for publication, probably in October. In the meantimo a number of amendments to the present regulatious would be gazetted tin's week, but these would not affect ,the work for this year. TBe. chief alterations would provide for greater emphasis on such essential matters as accuracy of speech, intelligent reading, accuracy in arithmetic, and ft sound knowledge of history, Nature study, and geography. Provision would also be made for necessary concessions to girls, to enable them to devote more attention to needlework and domestic science. Teachers who desired to _be regarded as efficient were being, en joined to pay specfii attention to tile physical wellbeing of children, and to tako an active part in their physical training, in co-operation with the medical inspectors, sohool nurses, and physical, instructors.

In regard to the inspection of schools, it was; provided that more time would be devoted to the smaller sohools, and to the less experienced teachers. _ In. cases of pupil.; teachers and probationers not showing a satisfactory advance in examination status during- their training, an explanation of sucn failure would be required of the head teacher concerned.
