Forsyth were present #at the monthly meeting of tie Wellington Education Board held yesterdayr The financial statement submitted to members showed receipts since last meeting amounting to £16,473 9s. 4d., to meet payments amounting to £16,743, showing a debit of £714 10s. 7d., as against a debit of £1444 4s. :Bd. on February 28. • 'Tho board consented to the cancellation of the balance of a grant for the purchase and improvement of the Mauriceville School residence, conditionally on the Department undertaking to reinstate the balance when the board was in a position to carry out. tho work.
The matter of training children in the country ;to know what noxious weeds were when they-saw them, was discussed, and it was decided to forward a letter to all teachers of agriculture, urging, that, instruction .should be given to school children on noxious weeds. ■ ' • Notification was received that H. N\ Burns had .qualified, for a senior national scholarship. _ It, was decided to accept the suggestion of tho Department regardine tho appointment of ex-students on military service to positions in the board's service, granting them leave of absence in the meantime, so that tho time when they wero in khaki may. count for superannuation. • It was;.further approved that tho board endeavour to induce Jeachers entitled \to retire under ordinary.conditions to continue service during tho currency of the war. A report was received that, an attempt /had been made to' burn -, down the mam school at Pahiatiia. Referring to the age of some of-tho schools m Wellington in connection with acts of attempted arson, Mr. T. Forsyth remarked—"l am rather surprised that they attempted : to burn a good school like Pahiatua., Now, if- they had come to the city thrre might havo been some excuse.'for it!"' .
