WOMEN FARM WORKERS

RESPONSE TO NATIONAL RESERVE APPEAL. In answer to the Efficiency Board's appeal for applications from women willing to accept farm work, the ftapier AVomcn's National Reserve announces that only 20 women have so far answered the call in this district. As tho appeal, was widely published in tho Napier and Hastings districts, the result is, according to our Napier correspondent, considered very poor, and it is distinctly felt that the women have not risen to the occasion. Those who have applied express their absolute willingness to do whatever lies in their power in any way to assist. Those connected with the reserve feel that the Efficiency Board would bo well advised without delay to accept the services of these patriotic women.

There was a largo attendance at- Dr. Hardwink Smith's health talk given at •the Y W.C.A. on Saturday night, when tho lecturer emphasised the need for j special caro if young girls were to grow ! into healthy women. The various nervous troubles of young women were often caused iu early girlhood hy-tho strenuous life/which is the result of the times in which we Eve. He stated that quite a large proportion of young children suffered! from over-strained hearts. The people , of New Zealand ate more meat than was good for them. Notwithstanding this, nothing better could be given to , a convalescent patient than a mutton chop, which is the least harmful of meats. Another joint the doctor mentioned was the importance of children eating fat in some form, as no ono who ate a fair • proportion of this food would be likely to develop consumption. Many pertinent questions were asked at the close of tho lecture', and much useful information was given by Dr. Hardwick Smith.
