LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
—~.. — BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. Mr. H. Baldwin (Mayor) presided over last 'evening's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. Members present were Councillors Hobbs,' Ball, Heron, dendon, Brassel, Carver, Meldrum, and Hodgins. . Tho engineer in his report stated that during the past fortnight five, gas and two water connections had been made, bringing tho total connections to date up t0'614 and 1042 in tho respective services. ..."
W. Andrews wrote . complaining of the .condition of Colin Street, and asking that attention be given to it. The matter was referred to the engineer. The secretary of tho Hutt Park Committee inquired whether, the council would be prepared to accept dedication of a strip of land approximately 15 feet wide along tho Randwick Road frontage of tho park for,the widening of that road. It was resolved to refer the matter to the engineer for report. A. request was received from P. H. Smith for assistance in. the construction of a pipe culvert for the purpose of conveying the creek water through his property in Brunswick Street and the properties of other owners in the vicinity. The clerk was instructed to rep>ly that tho council did not intend to take any such action at present: .'_ The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a Gazette notice regarding the observance of Anzao Day on Monday, April 23. , It wag decided to take stops to commemorate the occasion, A. letter was received from the Department of Lands and Survey asking whether there was any likelihood of the council consenting to the exclusion from the borough area of the _ HallJones Settlement, on which it is proposed to settle discharged sc.ldiers. The council objected to the proposed severance on the ground that the land was pledged for loans and could l.ot be freed from rates payable en loaus. The chairman of the_ National Efficiency Board wrote urging the council to take steps for the enjoyment of women and ineligible mon in older to release for service' men of the Second Division. It was decided to have a report on the matter. A deputation waited upon the council to ask for a path in place of the steps near the Wattle track on tho Normandale Road, and for adequate lights in that quarter. Tho deputation was informed that the matter would receive consideration. The requests were referred to a committee. ~
