THE PERJURY TRIAL AT HAMILTON
CASE AGAINST KANIKA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hamilton, March 26. ' The hearing of the perjtiry charges in connection with the Rua trial at Auckland -vyas continued. in the. Supreme Court this morning, before Mr. Justice Hosking. Mr. Selwyn Mays-appeared for the Crown. ' The first prisoner arraigned was.Tutara Kanika, who was charged with having' committed perjury in swearing that the first shot at Maungapohata on April 3, 1916, ,was fired by Constable Skinner from a revolver; that Constable Skinner was riding a black horse, and had a baton, a rife, and a revolver. Prisoner, who pleaded "Not guilty," was represented by Mr. Lundon. In opening the case for the Crown, Mr. Mays said this charge went to f.c. whole root of the defenoe in the Rua trial, because tho most feature of the offence at that ,trial was that'the police fired the first shot.
Evidence for tho Crown goes to show that when, the polico party was about a milo and a half from Rua's pa Senior Sergeant Cassells, .. acting under instructions, gave' his 'carbine to Constable Skinner; The latter then liaMed Senior' Sergeant Cassells his revolver, pouch, and belt, which ho put on. Senior i Serceant Cassells in evidence said that the revolver, belt, etc., was not returned to Skinner until the following Monday.
