SLANDER CASE All' MASTERTON.
By Telegraph-Special Correspondent. Mastertorh March 23. A caso of consider interest' has occupied the Supremo Court for the last three'days, and was concluded this evening. Thomns-'Jones,. motor-! agent, claimed £2i)'Do damages' front David Foreman, a farmer, for maliciously, falsely, and irithout reasonablo cause, laying a complaint against tho. plaintiff that he wap th» father of & certain illegitimate child. The complaint was withdrawn after .proceedings had been taken) aaginsfc Foreman,' who -was'.adjudged jby the Magistrate to bo the father of 1 the child in question.
Mr. T. -M. Wilfortl appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Gray, K.C., for. the defendant. The ovidenco was similar to that given in tho base against Foreman in tho Lower :Curt. The jury, after a retirement of about three-quar-ters of an hour, returned a verdict for the plaintiff, and awarded him £750 damages. Tho ovidenco taken in the caso is to bo used! in the appeal of! Foreman against the decision' of the Magistrate, and legal argument on appoal is to be taken in Wellington.
