CHIEF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS

MR. T. R. FLEMING TRANSFERRED i TO OTAGO.

Mr. T. R. Fleming, Chief Inspector of Schools in the "Wellington education district, has been, appointed similar duties in the Dunedia district, in place of the late Mr. C. R.. D. Richardson. AVho will succeed Mr. Fleming here has not yet been decided, but . Mr. F. G. A. Stuckey, of the inspectorial staff, is to be located at Master ton, which indicates a change' of policy in respect to the work of school inspection. Mr. T. R. Fleming has, with the exception of one break, been in the service of the Wellington 'Education Board for * tli'e past twenty-seven years. He was prior, to that an assistant master at Wellington College. He received an appointment as an assistant inspector, and retained that position under Mr.' Robert Lee until Mr. Lee retired, and Mr. Fleming was appointed to succeed him (in 1002) as chief inspector. Tinder the amending Act of 1914, the inspectors became officers directly connected with the Depart- | ment, and answerable to the Department, and not. the board,, since when the duties have been carried out praotically on the same lines as; before, with Mr. Fleming attending meetings of the board in an advisory capacity, M'r. Fleming's work as an educationist in this district cannot be disassociated from his connection'with Victoria College. He was a warm advocate for its establishment, has been a member of the council ever since it was constituted, and was for two years chairman.
