DISTRICT REPORTS. . (Prom Our Bpeolal Corresnondents.) Peatherston, Maxoh 22.—Bright and warm. Greytoira, March 22.—Fine. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, tho late Mr. John Gavan Duffy, whose death in Melbourne occurred last week, was afc ono_ time editor of "The Nation." An interesting story is_ told by Mr. J. M. Glover, in his reminiscences, how on one occasion Sir Charlos, thon known as Gavan Duffy, was indicted and convicted of liigh treason for publishing verses written by "Spcranza" (who was Lady Wilde, mothor of Oscar and William Wilde), a conviction that was subsequently quashed. "Whon tho prosecuting counsol read the poem aloud there was a horrible deathly sympathetic silence through the Court in Green 'Street, Bublin," relates Mr. Glover, "only broken by some female sobbing and an emotional move in tho gallery, as an almost fainting woman /cried: 'I aloue a mthe culprit.'
