LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE. The annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of tho Royal Life-Saving Society was hold at the Boys' Institute last evening. Dr.' Newman, M.P., presided over a fair attendance of members. One of the report already published strongly advocated the introduction of compulsory swimming tuition in the schools. Mr. G. S. Hill, chairman of the centre, referring to tho hopes of tho society in_ regard to compulsory tuition in swimming, said that something of the kind was likely to oome into force._ The Director of Education had been interviewed, and the Minister had expressed. himself in favour of tlio society's proposals. Mr. Hill said he could not understand why any schoolmaster should be opposed to the scheme when the beneficial results of swimming tuition among children were so apparent. The secretary reported that the number of awards made by. the centre for the period August 1 last to date totalled 236, which was. a record. Townsend, H. Amos, and Dr. Platts-Mills; chairman of executivo, Mr. G. S. Hill; vicechairman, Mr. C. T. Bell;.chief honorary instructor, Mr. J. A. Duffy; examiners, Messrs. Somervillo, Collier, Shields, ■ Perry, and Dixon ; assistant chief instructor, Mr. C. Mitchell; representative on Dominion Executivo, Mr. J. Wynn-Invin; district representatives, Mr. J. Foster, Gill, Kober, Gleave, Robertson, Beckett, Waymouth, Geary, Wakelin, Morpeth Mrs. Walker, Miss Edmanson. It"was resolved to forward a Totter, to Mr. J. Duffy (formerly chief instructor, and now in camp), thanking him for his past sorvices, and wishing him every success.
