•■ Vice Regal. Their Excellencies the Governor and tho Countess of Liverpool returned from the south yesterday. The date of their departure for Auckland has not yet been fixed. The Hon. W. H. Herries left by the Main Trunk train last night for Hastings. He will spend this afternoon there, and will then leave via Martou' and jTrankton for his own electorate. Ho expects to be back in Wellington on Thursday.

A Press Association, message from Sydney states that Mr. Richard Teece, general manager of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, a New Zealander, retires at the end of April. Dr. the Hon. W. E. Collins, medical officer commanding the hospital ship Marama, arrived fro.V the south on Saturday morning l .

Lieutenant Downie Stewart, M.P., left Dunedin on Saturday morning for Rctorua for hospital treatment.

Mr. John Vaniham, for the past twenty years connected with the clerical staff of the Wellington Education Board, for the last twelve of which he has been chief clerk, handed in his resignation to the secretary (Mr. G. L. Stewart) on Saturday morning. Mr. Varnbam, who is a well-known and popular officer, was originally brought up on a farm, and he has now ac-1 quired a 200-acre dairy farm in the Levin district, and intends to take ' possession about the middle of next month. His reason for changing his vocation is partly owing to the nervous break-down he experienced last year, and the possibility of a recurrence of such conditions if he remains at office work.

Mr. R. B. Magee, of the Post and Telegraph Department, is going into camp to-day. Mr. Magee, who saw service in the Boer War, has been secretary of the Poneke Football Club for somo ten years, and is also a member of the Wellington Rugby Union Committee. He is on the executive of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association, and is well known to the Wellington public, having been counter clerk in the Telegraph Office for many years, and later doing telephone payment work.

Private advice has been received in Palmerston North that 'Mr. Arthur Winton, a son of Mr. J. S. Winton, of the Railway Department, has received a certificate of efficiency and commission in the Flying Corps. Lieut. Winton, before enlisting, was on the Palmerston North staff of Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and went to Egypt with the 11th Reinforcements.

Mr. F. S. Hoy, who has been connected with the Tramways and Electrio Lighting Departments of the Wellington City Corporation for the past twelve years, and who hold the position of secretary to the Tramways Board, nas resigned to take up a position in the Dofenco Department.

Mr. E. Willis, a well-known Postal official, lias retired on superannuation after forty years' service.

Mr. George Luxfcon, for the past three years head of tho furnishing and carpet department at Te Aro Houso, who has enlisted, and goes into camp on April 2, was on Saturday tho recipient of a soldier's radium-faced wristlet watch and a case of pipes from the staff. The presentation was made by the general manager, Mr. Thomas Forsyth.

Mr. ii. Burnett, of the wool department of the N.Z. Fanners' Co-opera-tive Distributing Co., Ltd., who is going into camp with the 28th Reinforcements, was the recipient of an engraved wristlet watch from his colleagues, also a cheque from tho firm. Tho presentation was made hy Mr. Lambert.

Mr. I''. 0. Hill, late, storeman at the Wellington Hospital, who is severing his connection, with tho abovo institution, after ton years' service, was presented by his felloif employees on the evo of his departure with a. Morris chair. The house steward, Mr. H. L. Fox, iu making the presentation, wished Mr. Hill every success and happiness in his new sphere of life., Mr. Hill, in reply, extended thanks for the useful gift presented, and referred to many happy days ho had spent while associated with the Hospital stall'. Mr. Herbert Bloy has been re-elected conductor of the Wellington Professional Orchestra for ' tho approaching winter season.

Miss Eicknell, inspector for the Health Department, and late matron of the hospital ship Maheno, has been transferred temporarily to Auckland from tho Wellington office of the Department.

Mr. J. .leffery (of Dimedin), having been informed that it is essential for him to live in Wellington .to carry on the work of assistant editor of the "School Journal," has declined tho appointment, as the remuneration offered tor what was advertised as a- Temporary appointment, does not justify him in leaving Dunedin.
