BOROUGH OF MIRAMAR

FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEET-

The fortnightly meeting of the Miramar_ Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. F. Townsend) presided, and there were also present Councillors Green, ' Hawthorne, Tracey, Telford, and Underwood.

A circular from tho National Efficiency Boa; d was read, stating that a National Efficiency Board had been formed by the Government to investigate, among othqr things, in what manner the national efficiency of the Dominion could be increased' ternuorarily during the present war conditions and permanently wher. the war shall have happily ended. Speaking in connection with the circular, the Mayor (Mr. F. (gownsend) stated that there was not much the borough could do in the matter so far as labour was concerned, and the council hadl for soma time been cutting down expenses and labour as much: as possible. lie did r.ot think that women were yet required to take lip roadmen's duties, and he hoped they would not he required. He did! not, under th? circumstances, think the council could assist. Tho borough engineer was instructed to go through tho circular and replv to the board in detail. Mr. W. Ho'pkirk, of Inglis Street, wrote asking that the council review their decision in connection with his application for a sewerage extension. The council decided that they would adhere to their previous decision, namely, to pay half tho cost of tho extension if Mr. Hopkiik paid half. The clerk was instructed to reply to Mr. G. W. Astley, wlio is building a house in the fame Street that tho extension of the sewerage would be made to his house provided he paid half the cost.
