K good favourite i« Birkenfrale took charge from Coolpan and Asssociation,. and the trio ran in "this order a-o alio post. The Higlulen .representative Bad. an advantage of lengths when passing jkho judge, whilo Association, who is a good, game sort, .was a length behind rCoolpan. The latter is very backward, u? SBe a better day. Outsido of fthe placed horses. Galore, Crescent Moon, jaiid R-obur did tho 'best.' ' . .Miss do Val, Soa Lord, and Botanist Svero the withdrawals from tho March Handicap. Nystad did a splendid preliminary, and gained much support in ■consequence. Waimatoa was the nest Ibest backed, and then followed Mcnelaus. lAt the 6tart tho two favourites were unlucky, and lost several lengths. The early running was made by Otter and lindy Goneral, with Lady Black handy. lAt the half-way. Waimatoa joined Lady General, and tho pair fought out i the rest of the way. Horsemanship preTailed at the finish, and so. Prico got iWaimatoa's noso in front as the po=t *rns reached. Lady Black w!is closo up third. Nystad and Menelau's both shaped badly.
Pohehe, who drow No. 1, and had tho nllowance, was a better favourite than 'Perfidy in tho Masterton Hack Handicap. The light-weight began very smartly! and with Captain GlossoJ) led the ■favourite down the back, with the others Punched. At tho half-mile tho top-weight ■pulled to. tho front, and led into tho straight from the other pair. Down the running, Captain Glossop joined in, and after a great finish the top-weight got the verdict by a very narrow margin. Kukri finished up well, and cut Pohehe out of third place. Rovalenta and Cynic, ■both of whom were fancied, fsiled badly. The betting in tho. Cup was very even, Your of tho runners being heavily back«d. Devotion was the absolute favourite, •Vith Ararat, Miss do Val, and Tango jnp 'with her. At the start, Multicipal :ivas sloit to move, and Tango and Miss de Val led out of tho-strnight and'down tho back. At tho six furlongs. Pacific Slope ivas running third, with Ararat and Devotion following. Rounding the Jbend, Devotion- moved up to Tango, but fiMiss do Val held her lead, and in the trun to the post won nicely by two [lengths. Pacifio Slope canio fast at tho Ornish, and beat Devotion for second rolace. Tango and Multicipal were the pnext to finish, while Ararat stopped ifondly, and was last.
f_ Commont was a slightly better favourlite than Bairnsdale and Sabana in the puamahiinga Hack Handicap. At the start (Comment and Sabana led a bunched field, wind theynero still in chiirgo when the straight was reached, with BAttle Song in third place. The tiro leaders kept (their positions in the run down the istiliight, but the weight told on Sabaria, and tho Wairarapa mare, finishing strongly, won. by a neck. Battle Song was three lengths away, and then came Kiltess and Ngarna., Bairnsdale failed jbadly.
Bylstone saw a very short price in Jt.lie Ladies' Purse, and ho duly won, but Jwas doing his 1 best at the finish to stall soft Lord Nelson. Takapau led for half •the journey, but then the favourite went "through on tho inside and was not again headed. After the race Mr. G. {Beatson, "rider of, the winner, was presented with a gold-mounted whip, donated by llrs. C. P. Vallance. A favourite in Gang Awa turned up tfn 'the Opaki Welter Handicap. The ,'Fordell representative was always in ijthe picture, and won easily at tlie finish, while Goldstreani beat Haurnakaka nby a head for second p-lace. Paraoa Vwas fourth, and v:as followed by Sir jKolo and. Altercation.
