WESTERN WARFARE IN THE EAST
AEROPLANES AND LIVE WIRE ON INDIAN FRONTIER.
The Special Correspondent of the Associated Press of Now York in India, in'a dispatch from Peshawar, states: '•Tho latest ph.ase of the punishment being meted out to the turbulent Mohmands, who have been giving a lot of trouble lately, occurred today, when thousands of troops engaged in a drive which resulted in the round-ing-up for internment of 400 Mohmands. As a- penalty for raids committed a year ago, Sir George RoosKeppel, the Chief Commissioner for lAie North-West Frontier Provinces, put up along tho Mohmand border a lino of barbed wire entanglement. The Government of In<iia at the same time imported a largo number of aeroplanes, the first ever seen in this part_of the world. After some further raids Sir George Roos-Kepi)el ordered the installation of a live wire, which has been slung along the whole Mohmand irontier, a distance of about seventeen miles. Our - Baramta' (the nativo name for a drive,, meaning reprisal) was carried out most methodically. It was a curious sight to see tho scores of Mohmands scurrying like scared rabbits for the cover of the cane fields and villages ahead of the advancing troops. Straight through the heavy barrier of cane, with its razor-like blades, went tho Tommies and Lancers, emerging on the further side with their catch of Mohmands, who H'ero herded together under guard and brought along in tho rear. -For tho most part the Mohmands gaveino trouble beyond trying to escape; there was little that they could do., in truth, against so many troops."
