FRENCH ATTACKS IN CHAMPAGNE BEYOND BAGDAD ! TURKS PRESSED 30 MtLES NORTH CHINA BREAKS WITH THE HUNS Another substantial gain by the British in their attack on. the Bapaume position is reported in the dispatches from the Western front to-day. The Frcnch aro busily engaged with the enemy on the Champagne front, and the fighting las beon to the disadvantage of the enemy. In Mesopotamia the British advanced troops are thirlv miios north of Bagdad, and steps are being taken to prevent tho inundation of the city with the rising of tho river. German reports indicate considerable activity by the French on the Macedonian front, and from the same source it is gathered that there is activity on tho Russian line on the Nariuvka, yi the southern arena. China has severed diplomatic relations with Germany, and seized a number of interned German ships. Mr. Gerard, tho ex-Ambassador for the United States at Berlin, has arrived safely at Washington. He considers that war betweon Germany and America is inevitable, and urges the nation to press on with its war preparations.
