FIRE AT KHANDALLAH
A SERIOUS OUTBREAK. The residents of Khandallah had an exciting timo yesterday coping with an outbreak of fire that originated in some grass alongside the railway lino, and spread so as to constitute within a short time a very serious menace to the locality. The blaze swept over the dry paddocks, and was not suppressed until a house owned by Mr. Palmer (who is in camp), and occupied by SergeantMajor Keay, of tho Base Records Office, had been burned dbwn. Luckily, the bulk of tho sergeant-major's furniture was coming up from Dunedin, but had not arrived. His loss was therefore. less than it might have been, though it actually amounted to about £50. Captain M'Arthur's residence had a very narrow escape, and the Town Hall also. The Wellington Fire Brigado, with it 3 chemical engine, did splendid work in combating tho flames, but the fact that there was no water supply was a serious handicap to the willing band of fire fighters. Tlie experience was one that will not bo forgotten by the Khandallah' residents for some time to come.
