THE TERAWHITI. The salvage tug Terawhiti arrived in port at 11.20 o'clock last night from Gisborno, where she- was at work on the Arahum. The. Arahura arrived at Auckland yestorday alteruoon from Gisborne. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain B. M. Aldwell, who has been acting as master of the Moeraki, came ashore at Wellington ou Thursday for instructions, and Captain Collins, who had. been on holiday leave, resumed command. Mri J. Bitchie lias joined tho' Kakapo as second officer in placo of Mr. M. L. Singleton. Mr. . F. Jaquiery, assistant purser on the Mararoa, signed on the Mocraki on Thursday. Mr. L. C. Smart has joined the Patcena as purser, vice Mr. R. V. Dickey, who has como ashore. Mr. P. 0. Eos?, who has been an extra officer on X\ia Kaituua, came ashore yesterday. Mα-. R. J. Forster, late of tho Westralia, lias joined the Wimmera as fourth officer. Mr, E. C. Thompson has signed on the vessel's articles as third engineer, relieving Mr. Gillies, who has retained to Dunedin on holiday leave. Hr. H. Scott has joined the Wimmera. as fourth engineer. The Blenheim, which has been undergoing overhaul for some time, is expected to bo dispatched for Eavelock and Pelorus .Sounds about Wednesday next. The scow Eunice has been fixed to load at Timaru for Wellington on Tuesday. The Ngahere will go on the Patent Slip for overhaul at 7 a.m. to-day. The Mapourika. in continuation of her voyage to Wellington from tho West Coast was timed to sail from. Nelson at niidnisht on Friday. The KinL is expected to leave Grcyniouth to-night for 1 Wellington. The Corinna sailed from Oamaru on Friday night for Wellington. Tho vessel is due hero on Sunday, and will rail for - New Plymouth on Monday; with cargo. Tho Monowai should arrive from Auckland, via way ports, this afternoon. Departure for Dunedin direct will be taken at 8 p.m. On the return trip the usual call at Lyttelton will be made. Tho Tainui, which sailed for Picton last night, -will be engaged in lightering work at that port for several days. The John loaded explosives .at Shelly Bay yesterday, and sailed for Dunedin djrect. The Union Steam Ship Company's Rakanoa has 'heen chartered by the residents of the Chatham Islands to convey a. consignment of sheep to the Addington markets. She will make two trips—one 1o Lyttelton and one to Timaru*. The expense of the charter is £110 a day, which will work out, not including delays, at over ss. per head on the sheep. The Canterbury Company's steamer Calm arrived at Diinedin on Thursday from Lyttelton. After discharging a large quantity of cargo from northern norts she will go to Port Chalmers to he <fry-docked for overhaul. The vessel is fixed to leave about March 13 for Wellington and Wanganui. The Kurow sailed from Newcastle on Thursday with a full cargo of coal for Wellington. The Kauri, which is due at Auckland with coal from Westport on Monday, will undergo survey on completibn of discharge. The steamer Koonookarra, which has been engaged in the inter-island trade of tho Solomon Group for Lever's Pacific Plantations. Ltd.. returned to Sydney on February 22. The object of her visit is to undergo an extensivo overhaul, rendered necessary after several years of active service among the islands. Captain M'Erido is in command. In the "Commonwealth Gazette," issued' on February 15, it was announced that the ports of Dnvonport, Ulvei-ston. Bnrnie, Stanley, and Slrahan, in. Tasmania, were j to he closed for Customs business from i April 1, 1917. Til* Controller of Customs, j stated that tho action had nothing to do ] with.the work of tho Shipping Board in controlling shipping, but was merely a step in the policy of economy that was being followed by tho Department. Other ] ports in other States were being closed for Customs business in the same way. T-ta Wimmera is due to-day from Dunedin and .Lytlelton, and is timed to sail for Sydney, via northern ports, this afternoon.
