By Telegraph—Press Association. VVairoa, March 8. A strike occurred at tho AVairoa Freezing Company's works to-day. "Whilst the men were being paid at 1 o'clock a worker informed the manager of the company that ho had been appointed a delegate for tho slaughtermen's assistants, and they demanded Is. 6d. an hour for general hands, tho same as, they stated, was being paid at- the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay works. 1 After paying out, tho manager mot the men, who had then ceased work, and informed them that ho had information that tho pay in Gisborno, and, as far as he know, tho pay hero were oxactly on similar terms, but as they considered the rate there was Is. 6d. per hour, ho would give this for that afternoon, so that work would continue, and ho would ho enabled in tho meantime to get into communication with the various freezing works. He said if ho found that the rate paid elsewhere was Is. 6d., this would bo paid from now onwards, and. further, that the pay would ho retrospective from the commencement of killing. The men decided that they could, not accept the offer, and that a definite statement that Is. 6d. per hour would he paid for the future must be given. They demanded immediate attention for their claim, failing which they would stno work. The manager stated that as this was the first intimation given he was not prepared, without consideration, to make a oromise for the future on the spur of the moment. Tinder tho agreement with the freezing works at Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay general hands 'received Is. 3d. per hour, plus 1A per cent, war bonus. "Tho men walked out of the slaughterhouse, leaving sheep hanging on the rails from the butchers without tho lddncvs taken out or one moment's notice given, thus throwing out the rest of tho workers. There are oyer 4000 sheep in the yards, for which it will bo difficult to find accommodation. Tho engineers are loyal to the company. _______
