SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON
FINAL LECTURE IN WELLINGTON* Sir Ernest Shackleton described his recent experiences in the Antarctic to a large and keenly interested audi-. ence in the AVellington Town Hall last evening. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was in the ohair, and explained that tho explorer, who had previously told his story on the same platform, had consented to give a second lecture in aid of the Red Cross and the fund for the widow of the late Captain Mackintosh.
The lecturer, who was received with prolonged- applause, described his attempt to reach new coast in the Atlantio sector of the Antarctic continent, the loss of the Endurance in the grip of the ice, the wrecked party's long drift on an ice-iloe, and the wonderful voyage in a small open boat to South Georgia, after some of the men had been placed in temporary safety on Elephant Island. He told of the rescue of the Elephant Island party at the fourth attempt in a small vessel borrowed from a South American Government, and concluded with the story _ of. the adventures of the Ross Sea section of his expedition. The lecture was illustrated with a largo number of- lantern slides, produced from'tho photographs taken by the explorers. Many of the pictures had not been seen in Wellington previously. They included a very interesting and entertaining series depicting the life history of the penguin. At the conclusion of his lecture. Sir Ernest Shackleton warmly thanked the Mayor and citizens of Wellington for the hospitality that had been extended to the members of his expedition. He also expressed his appreciation of the kindnesses that had been extended to him by the Government and people of New Zoaland. '
