CLERGY AND WAR SERVICE
A BISHOP'S ATTITUDE. . "The desire of some people that the clergy should bo called up for military, service seems to me to bo a. sign or spiritual fiabbiness," said Dr. Avenll,' Anglican Bishop of Auckland, in thq, course of a sermon at 'St. Mary'a Cathedral on Sunday. "No men are more ready to fight for their country, than the clergy," ho continued. I do not suppose that there is a clergy-;! man in this diocese who has not ashen me for leave to go and fight, though it is contrary to the law of the Church* Do you know that there is a. proßpectJ; that we shall have to close some of ours churches, and that religious ministrations will be Tcd-jced, and this in face of the testimony of Lord Roberts that there is no more vital need than religion in times like these? If I ant drawn in the ballot I. shall go gladly, but I believe that, tho maintenance oiv religion is vital."
