MILITARY SERVICE BOARD SITTING IN WELLINGTON 'Additioual appeals were heard in the city yesterday by the Third Wellington Military Service Board. James Charles. It was now stated thai) Stent had been passed by the Medical Board. The case was adjourned sine* die, exemption being .granted in tho meantime, the case'.to be again before the First: Division was exhausted. ...,..-.■' .... Tho appeal of Oharlea'Onyon, managing editor of ;i'The-.Timberman," a journal published in the-United States, was further considered. Appellant had beeu passed as fit, and ho asked for four or five months' exemption/in order to allow him to wind up his affairs.: which included a timber importing business. Ho was years of age. The appeal had been made on the t round of public interest. The board ismissed the appeal. Frederick Page, tea merchant, said that two of. tho three members of his firm had been drawn in the ballot. He had tried to enlist in Australia in 'the early days of tho war. but had been. rejected as being too heavy. He had not volunteered in New Zealand. He married about twelve months ago. Ons member of the firm had gono into camp and his place could.not be filled. Appellant had two brothers in tho Impetial Forces. The appeal was dismissed, the military representative (Captain Baldwin) ' undertaking to secure Page two months' leave. Frederick Geo'rgo Hedges, for whom Mr. O'llogan appeared, had been in camp since February 7, and asked for two months' leave in order to euable him to arrango his own andhisfirm'3 financial affairs. He was partner and accountant in a firm engaged in the mamrfacturo of perambulators. The board granted leave until April 1. William Henry Keast, operator, Britannia Theatre, appealed on the ground that he was not a reservist, and so should not have been drawn in tho_ ballot. Ho had enlisted* with the. Main Body, and served for nearlv two years, being wounded at Gallipot! ano. discbarged as medically unfit. The ap-peal-was allowed. \ .
Albert Fisher Edmonds, engineer on a steamer engaged in tho home trade/ had appealed on the ground of occupation.
John Ryder Roper, local manager of the- Commonwealth and Dominion Line,said that Edmonds was fifth engineer on a steamer engaged in loading meat; and wool for the United Kingdom. Ho ■was a New Zealander, but had signed on in London. The vessel was at present in the south, and was not calling at Wellington. If tho man -was sent into camp, his place could not be filled. Captain Baldwin: ! "There are hundreds of these engineers." In answer to further questions, witness said Edmonds had charge of the auxiliary engines and did relieving work. If lie were removed suddenly, the other engineers would have to carry on. Witness might think it necessary to appeal to the Homo authorities if tho board decided to take tho man. • ' _ The board produced a list of 77 marine engineers, holding shore jobs in New Zealand. The case was adjourned sine die, and appellant was granted exemption in the meantime, provided he remained in his present employment. Tho following appeals were withdrawn :—
