BRITISH ADVANCE CONTINUED
THE ASSAULT ON , SANNAIYAT The High Commissioner reports:— London, February 1 25, 4.30 p.m.' An official dispatch from Mesopotamia slates: "Tho southern portion of the Sannaiyat position, captured at the first assault on Thursday, consisted of two lines of trenches having a frontage of 450 yards by a. depth of 100 yards. Six Turkish counter-attacks were launched, and although one wag temporarily successful, our gains were seemed and consolidated. .On the same day wo further assaulted the first and second Turkish lines further northwards, and gained the whole of our objective on a frontage of 900 yards, which was firmly consolidated. "Plans were laid for tho crossing of tho Tigris near the Shumran Peninsula, on Friday. A bridge was constructed, and at nightfall the position on the left bank was secured and consolidated. . Simultaneously with the crossing of the river tho assault o.e Sannaiyat was re- ; sumedt tho third and fourth Turkish' lines being captured on a, front of .1050 yards. The present return, of prisoners in the' Shumran area totals eleven officers and 533 men." ■-•■•■.
