SICK AND WOUNDED

POSITION OF THE FUNDS

REPORT FROM THE MINISTER

The Hon. Sir James Allen wrote to the Advisory Board of the AVar Relief Federation yesterday to the effect that ho had had the Sick and Wounded Comforts Fund dissected, and found that the position in respect of the quota contributions was as follows:— Total contributions to date ... £17,669 Remittances to England and Egypt £11,637 - Balance on hand in N.Z. £6,032 Of the £6032, some £1306 had been received since September, 1916, the month that tho yearly contributions from the board ceased. The letter continued: "I have no very recent information in respect of the amount of money available in London, but the High Commissioner reported that the following balances were on hand on November 30:— £ Hio-h Commissioner's Comforts Fund ~. 11,337 N.Z. War Contingents Association Comforts Fund ■ 976 Special objects ; 233 Hospital Fund 2 Red Cross Fund 3,674 "Pending the decision of the Advisory Board as to whether it is prepared to agree to the payment for the erection of the social hall for' convalescent soldiers at Hornchurch being made a charge against its funds, tho High Commissioner has been instructed to pay the amount from the balance of £11,337 referred to above. Should the board decide that it cannot provide for the erection of such halls from its fundej the amount will, of course, be refunded by the Government to the High Commissioner's Comforts Fund Account.

"With respect to Egypt. Genera! Chaytor, in reply to a cablegram sent by me on the subject, intimated on December 7 that he held the following balances: — Sick and Wounded ..„ £1,100 ' Red Cross Fund £190 "His monthly expenditure is not great, being £58 15s. 4d. and £67 13b. 9d. respectively for the month, of November. You will therefore see that a considerable -amount of money still remains in hand for the purchase of extra comforts for the eick and wounded, and there seems no necessity for your board to provide any further money for February and March."
