CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND

Auckland, February 21. The Conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand was opened, to-day. ,Mr.. S. J. Harbutt, the Auckland president, was iu the chair. In his inaugural address the president advocated the holding of a ''Now Zealand Day" throughout the Dominion, renamone of the Government holidays. The conference resolved: "That the Government be asked at the earliest possible date to impose duty on the export of all New Zealand-grown timber, with a view, to conserving ib for dairying and other industries of the Dominion, due' consideration being given to existing contracts." It was also resolved: "That the executive be requested to place before the Industrial Efficiency Board the importance of scientific research in industries."

A lecture on "Hydro-electric Power" was delivered by Mr. S. Invin Crookes, and a resolution was passed urging on the Government the desirability of establishing hydro : electrical power plants in the various centres of the Dominion, for the purposes of lighting and working industries.

A paper dealing with the apprentice question was given by Messrs". J. Mainland and T. 13allin<:er, of Wellington.
