PATENT SLIP COMMISSION
AN AGREEMENT PROBABLE Tho Patent Slip Commission, consisting of Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., and Mr. W. J. Roche, Hutt Borough Engineer, sat in tho Magistrate's Court on Thursay. The commission was instructed. to decide as to the construction of a road near tho Patent Slip. According to the original grant, the Patent Slip is empowered, when it was thought necessary and desirable, to closo the beacli road and construct another road over the hill, and the Go'vj ernment has the right to order the formation of this road. At present traffic has to go across tho slipway, and the question has arisen whether tho delays which occur when vessels are being drawn up are of such a character as to warrant, a road deviation. The object of the commission is to decide whether there is any necessity for this deviation. . 1 A second Slip is in course of construction, as required by the Harbour Board, and the City Council demanded tliat tho Patent Slip Company should construct tho road deviation, while tho company was opposed to this course, considering it to be ■unnecessary at the present time. A week ago tho parties interested obtained an adjournment for the purpose of a private conference, and Mr. J. O'Shea, who appeared for the City Council, now announced that an agreement would probably be readied. Mr. M. Myers, who appeared for the Patent Slip Company, confirmed 1 this statement, as did Mr. T. Weston, representing the Wellington Harbour Board. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was callccii by Mr. O'Shea. The Mayor said tho present road round Evans Bay was a level one, wlijle the deviation road over tho hill leauing to tho whole Miramar Peninsula would be very steep, something like 1 in 15, and tortuous. Furthermore it had 1 beenascertained that the Harbour Board would some 'day construct a dock in that neighbourhood, which would involve a certain amount of reclamation work, the spoil for which would have to bo taken from tho hill at tho hack of the Patent Slip. It was therefore agreed to maintain tho present beach road opcu until such time as the work in connection with the dock was completed, when it would be possible to construct a now road on the ;ia;no level as the present one, and passing behind tho Patent Slip. This would be entirely satisfactory so long as tho present rights of tho City Council wero consorffcd. Mr. W. 11. Morton, who also gave evidence, said tho present roadway could ho improved by removing tho blacksmith's shop, which abuts on tho road, and improving the near tho Patent Slip, and covering tho rails to prevent vehicles being bumped when using that part of the roadway. This covering dQjild be of a character to bo easily removable. The commission adjourned to Wednesday, February 21, Mr. O'Shea in the nieanwhilo to submit his proposals to the other parties with a view if possible of arriving at a definite agreement. Tho commission's report has to be handed in on February 28..
