THE "H" IN WHANGANUI

AN INQUIRY. Sir, —I have been endeavouring locally, to obtain the reason why the letter "h" has been dropped from the name of this town. There is no record office or any officials old enough in the service who are conversant with the subject; so much so that even my application by letter to our evening paper received no answer. It is therefore quite clear that the information I asked for they are ignorant of. As amongst your numerous readers are many who have the knowledge of the facts, _ I trespass on your indulgence in seeking your aid for the information I seek. I am told all Native Land Court documents spell the name of the town Whanganui, which I am told is the correct Maori way of doing so. fair Oliver Lodge says those who have gone West still take an interest in the activities they were engaged in on this earth. I wonder what the late Hon. John Ballance, revered, so I am told, \ b.v all in this town, and who founded \ our evening paper, must feel at the editorial's admitted ignorance of the historical facts associated with tho town. Anticipating your kindness.—l am. etc., lAN GTLRaji. AVanganui, February 15, 1917.
