HAWKES BAY SEAT
SIR JOHN FINDLAY'S PROSPECTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, February 15. The Hon. "W. D. S. Mac Donald has been hero several days in connection with the selection of a candidate for the Hawke's Bay seat. Ho left for Wellington this morning, and returns hero on Monday ext. The result of the visit has not been made public, hut Sir John Findlay ih regarded as likely to be selected. It is persistently rumoured that a meeting of Liboral delegatus on Monday next will ho asked to decide in Sir John Findlay's favour, and that there will be- no election unless a free lanco enters the lists. Sir John Findlay is expected at Hastings on Friday.
VACANCY NOTIFIED. As lie is required to do under the Legislature Act, the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Sir Frederick Lang) notifies in the Gazette of this week the death of the late member (Dr. M'Nab), and declares the seat vacant. This notification must ho gazetted before any steps can he taken to fill tho vacancy. After publication of tho notice, tho Clerk of "Writs. (Mr. J. Ilislop) proceeds at once to issuo the writ for a new election. Tho Act-ing-Prime Minister stated yesterday that the election would take place early in March.
It is considered a foregone conclusion almost that the meeting to be held at Napier on Monday will choose Sir John Findlay as tho Liberal candidate for Tlawko's Day. and that Sir John will accept the nomination. It is also nl4it.e<i authoritatively that Mr. U. Lan Simson is likely to stand, but thai) tiiore will bo no other candidate.
