MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A POLICE CASES. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.Jl'., presided at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. A young man named l'ercy Brickson waa charged with the theft of a gold bangle, two purses, and £2 155. in money, the property of Ellen Griffin; theft of a rainproof coat, ono razor, and three brushes, of tho value of .£6, the property of Cecil T. Carman; theft of a pair of field glasses, valued at 10s., the property of I' , . C. Priest; theft of two brooches, one trinket box, gold muff chain, gold ring, one pound note, and 3s. lid. in money, the property of May Bright, and the theft of one handbag, , value 155., the property of F. M. Lisle. The thefts were all committed hi hotels. Accused pleaded guilty to all charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. For insobriety, three first offenders wero convicted and dischnrged. Thomas Lane, who was found helplessly drunk in Egmont Street, was fined 205., in default ■Iβ hours' imprisonment.. William H'Daid, against whom there ! was ono previous conviction, was fined 105... the alternative being 43 hours' imprisonment, and Timothy Delaney, with two previous convictions, was fined 205., in default three days in gaol. Stephen Connolly, seaman on boaTd the 6.e. Knrow, chaTged "William Daniels, third officer of that vessel, with assaulting him. Mr. H. 1 , . O'Leary appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. H. E. Anderson for the -defendant. ■ It was brought out in evidence, that plaintiff went into the officer's room uninvited, and refused to go out when ordered. The officer stated that he pushed the man out, and tho latter fell. The plaintiff alleged that the officer struck him three blows. Two witnesses were called, but neither had seen the incident.' Mr. Eiddell remarked that the evidence was very conflicting; still it was difficult to believe that the plaintiff had been struck, in the. absence of more direct evidonce.
