Tho Board of Education to-day referred to the Council flf Education a report by .Dr. Elizabeth Jlacdonald in regard to thti causes of absence irom duty of female teiiefers, enpeciaUy pupil teachers. Tho report referred to the lolig. hours spent in stwly h y..P l, P'' teachers, resulting in irregularity ot meals, and curtailed hours of Bleep. Referring to the frequent breakdowns of assistant teachers,- the doctor stated that' the causes lay in too largo classes overcrowding, working conditions, and the difficulty of country teachers setting reasonably good homes. The doctor said improved health and happiness of teachers would not bo gained nntii the classes were reduced to forty pupils for one teacher. Many women teachers got nervous exhaustion by devotion to false standards of efficiency. There was too much working for external results, ton much pressure for examinations, and too little scope for originality and individuality.
