MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE CASES. Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. William Alfred Beaver went into the Brunswick Hotel while in an intoxicated state, and demanded to bo served with liquor. The barman refused to serve him, and" thereupon Beaver picked up tho off the counter and threw it at tho barman, but missed his mark, and damaged a bottle of gin. Beaver was convicted of assaulting tho barman, and fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment, and was ordered to refund the damages, 10s., in default seven days in gaol. ' For insobriety, Aland Grant, against whom t-hero wero previo.us convictions, was ordered to pay medical expenses, 17s. 6d., in default three days' -imprisonment, and a prohibition order was issued against/ her. '

Thehna Clothier and Dorothy Henderson wero charged with being idle and disorderly persons in that they had insufficient visible means of support. Senior-Sergeant Kmerson said the girls came up from Christchurch, and woro simply knocking about tho city aiid leading a dissolute life. He suggested that they should be sent back to their parents.

Lightfoot) proceeded against Robert Hannah, and Co. for a breach of an award in failing to pay their factory hands their wages within the time limit (5.5 p.m.). Mr. A. W. Blair, who appeared for defendants, explained that on tlio day in question a mistake occurred in the cash to the extent of 10s., somo employee being overpaid this amount. An endeavour was mado to discover the error, which caused some delay, and eventually tho hands were paid. A notice was prominently displayed, informing the employees that 10s. had been overpaid to- somo one of them, but tho amount was not recovered.

Mr. W. G. UiddeU, S.M., who presided, said there was apparently some excuse for the delay, but there was a trivial broach of the award, and he gave judgment for plaintiff for Is.

DEFENDED CASES. Mr. L. G. Keid, S.M., in deciding the defended case' in which Robert Westtield sued David' Oliver to recover £25, gave judgment for plaintiff for the full amount claimed, and costs £4 4s. Security for appeal was fixed in the sum of £8 Bs. In the case of Henry C. P. Blandford v. Thomas Kae, a claim for possession of tenement and £12 17s. 6d., plaintiff was nonsuited, no costs being allowed. Judgment was entered for plaintiff in the ease of E. J. Ellis v. William Nott for £5 9s. 6d., with costs 13s.
