AN UNRULY WITNESS

BEFORE MILITARY SERVICE ' BOARD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, February 12. Some excitement in connection "with the hearing of the military appeals occurred in Palmerston North to-day during tho hearing of the case of the brothers Keariu, of Longburn. The board found them in a hostile spirit. None of the three brothers had taken the oath, and when Justin Kearin appeared to corroborate the evidenco of his brother Maurice, the chairman asked him why ho had not taken the oath. "Quito a lot of other men havo got past without taking it," was tho re»ly. "Well, why didn't you tako it?" asked tho chairman.

"I didn't choose to," replied the appellant. This was met by expressions of annoyanco by the hoard. After a smart exchange of repartee between the Bench and Kearin, tile appellant was ordered out of the box. Later, he was asked to take the bath of allegiance, and on his refusing Major M'Donald ordered him to the colls. Ho was, however, spared that indignity, and was brought back to take tho oath, being later warned by the chairman that if ho did not behave himself he would bo charged with contempt of Court.
