' Au action for libel brought by Mr. Isidor Gunsberg. elie3s editor of the "Daily Telegrapn," .and a noted chess master, against the Associated Newspapers, Ltd., and .tho Chess Nows. Agency in respect of an' article in tho "livening News" was concluded recently. Sir. Gunsberg complained of an article in tho "Evening News" which, ho said, suggested that he "lad madii "blunders" by . giving chess problems capable : of at least two solutions. It was admitted that some of the paintiffs' problems had two solutions. Mr. J. H. Blackburne, called for tho plaintiff, said ho did not regard it, as _ a blunder to publish problems having, two solutions. For the defencc, Mr. Alfred William Foster, the writer, of the article in question, said that ho i liad been connected with the chess world fortwentyono years, and had. been president of tie Cambridge University Chess 1 Club. Ha had written tlio weekly chess column of the "Evening News" for somo timo through tho Chess Agency. He found, that there were an abnormally largo' number of unsound ones among plaintiff's problems, an<s "!io was amused to find a cliess expert' regarding cliess as being on tho level of a game of chsnce. His chess conscience was shdckgcl. (Laughter.). He had no malicious intention towards the plaintiff, and was only "poking mild fun at him," without mentioning his name. Tho jury roturned a vcrdict for the plaintiff,- and awarded him £250 damages.
